Bats in the Attic
FWC-compliant humane bat removal and exclusion to ensure your attic is bat-free.
At Florida Wildlife Specialists, we provide FWC-compliant humane bat removal and exclusion to ensure your attic is bat-free. Bats are beneficial to the environment and protected under Florida law, but they don't belong in your home. Our team will safely and effectively remove them and prevent re-entry.
Florida bat law: maternity season restrictions
Florida law (FWC) prohibits bat exclusion between April 16 and August 14. During this maternity-season window, flightless pups are inside roosts and would die if their mothers were excluded. Any bat work scheduled in your home will start no earlier than August 15. Inspections are still possible year-round, and we plan exclusions to begin the moment maternity season ends.
Why bat infestations require remediation
Home or business bat infestations can have various repercussions, ranging from structural damage to potential health risks. Common consequences include:
- Structural damage. Bats can roost in attics, walls, and other spaces, causing structural damage over time. Their nesting habits may lead to soiled insulation, stained ceilings, and compromised building materials. When left untreated, guano buildup can exceed hundreds of pounds.
- Guano accumulation. Bat droppings, known as guano, accumulate rapidly. Guano can corrode metal, stain surfaces, and emit a strong odor. The accumulation of guano can also harbor fungi that may lead to respiratory issues in humans.
- Health risks. Bat droppings can carry harmful pathogens. Inhalation of airborne spores known to contain Histoplasma may lead to respiratory problems such as histoplasmosis.
- Noise and disturbance. Bats are nocturnal. Activities during the night, such as chirping or scratching, can disturb sleep.
- Disease transmission. Bats are a regional rabies vector in Florida. Direct contact with bats or their saliva may pose a risk of disease transmission, emphasizing the importance of professional and safe removal.
- Decreased property value. A visible bat infestation can decrease the market value of a property. Potential buyers or tenants may be deterred by the associated structural and health concerns.
Our process
- Inspection. We conduct a thorough inspection of your attic and home to identify bat entry points and signs of infestation.
- One-way exclusion. We install one-way devices at every entry point. Bats fly out at dusk to feed and cannot get back in.
- Sealing. Once the colony has cleared, we seal openings with reinforced material so re-entry is impossible.
- Cleanup. We remove guano and decontaminate the affected areas using industry-grade PPE and HEPA equipment.
